What is the effect of banding on the face?
A mathematical process, fast Fourier transform (FFT), can be used to detect background banding and minimize its effect in an image. Notice how, in the photograph on the right, FFT filtering seems to change the shape of the face and nose. It also makes the eyes look more normal. The hair is less forward. It doesn't actually change the shape of the face; it merely minimizes background noise so details can emerge.
